The Lunar Codex project sends a substantial collection of film, music, art, and more chosen from 158 countries to the moon in 4-time capsules.
It is also the first project to launch the works of women artists to the lunar surface and to include work from disabled artists. The goal of this project is to preserve contemporary works for the future.
Mitsumori’s two Japanese mineral paintings were selected by the creator of Lunar Codex, Dr. Samuel Peralta, to be part of this project.
1: “Arcane”, 2020
2: “Map of intelligence series – A swing”, 2022
The image of these paintings will be digitised (saved on a memory card or etched on a nickel wafer) and then enclosed in the 4th time capsule, Polaris, scheduled to launch in November 2024. It will be the Astrobotic Griffin lunar lander, launching with the NASA VIPER rover via a SpaceX Falcon Heavy Rocket.
Mitsumori’s work is listed in the Gallery B of The Lunar Codex: https://www.lunarcodex.com/gallery-b
